Abstract
This paper arises out of a concern that since 1997 schools have been paying special attention to the development of creativity, lateral thinking and problem solving skills in our school going population; and that pupils have been taught to be deeper, more divergent, and more creative in thinking while at the same time there seems to be inadequate change in the formal assessment modes that are practised in schools. This paper highlights some instances where formal assessment in primary science does not
match the vision of achieving "Thinking Schools, Learning Nation".
