Abstract
The study will give us an insight to Project Work (PW) and its usefulness as a viable tool to develop character in students. Schools that are implementing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in their curriculum may face challenges such as the integration of SEL into the curriculum along with other school initiatives, teachers balancing their workload while incorporating SEL, and the assessment of SEL. The study will be able to provide teachers with valuable feedback on how PW can be evolved to provide a platform to bring meaning and motivation for students through the context of SEL. Through the process of conducting PW in XYZ Primary School, data was collected through focus groups, interviews and questionnaires. Each Primary 3 English Language teacher was asked to reflect on their experiences with regard to their views about the effectiveness in using PW to teach decision-making skills as identified by SEL. At the end of the Project Work, each student was given the opportunity to reflect on their experiences of learning decision-making skills during PW. The data collected from this study indicates that PW may be considered a viable platform to teach decision-making skills in schools. Schools should also consider using PW to teach other SEL skills and competencies.
