Abstract
This study is part of a program evaluation that investigates the effectiveness of the “Mission: I’m Possible” (MIP) program initiated by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) in 2009. Firstly, it aims to describe the profile of children who are at risk of reading difficulties. Secondly, it attempts to examine the effects of MIP literacy intervention on the developmental and literacy outcomes among preschool children with mild learning disabilities enrolled in our local kindergartens. The MIP group received 10 weeks of 45-minute therapy session in literacy within the kindergartens. The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Fourth Edition (PPVT-4) and the Woodcock Johnson-III Tests of Achievement (WJ-III) were used as pre-post measures of their literacy skills. Results of PPVT-4 and WJ-III generally indicated significant improvement in the literacy attainments and receptive vocabulary among the MIP group. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and selected subscales in the Behaviour Assessment System for Children (BASC) were used to gather teacher and parent feedback on children’s behavioural and psychological outcomes. A parent interview using a short (semi-structured) questionnaire was also conducted. Although results of SDQ and BASC showed no significant improvement in the overall behavioural and psychological domains as measured, the qualitative findings from the parent interview indicated that the MIP group demonstrated increase in overall self confidence towards literacy and social behaviour. Success factors and implications.
