Abstract
The aim of this research is to explore the effectiveness of the genre based approach as a method of instruction for the teaching of History in a neighbourhood school. The study will heighten an awareness of the genre based approach on their comprehension of History texts and the grades they obtain for assessments during and after a period of intervention. The research was carried out with the assumption that students who are made able to score better grades for History assessments.
This study examines the weakness of the prevalent method of teaching History which is content-based and argues that the weakness of the present method of teaching history are manifested in the difficulties faced by unsuccessful History students. It draws support largely from the research of functional linguists and genre based approach as a better alternative to content-based instruction for the teaching of History in a neighbourhood school.
The rationale of the study rests on the premise that the study of the genres of History exposes and acquaints students, engaged in such activities to the specialized discourse of History. The explicit teaching of the genres of History would enable the students to acquire the necessary skills to help them interpret History texts, acquire knowledge and formulate appropriate genres as answers for History assessments.
The findings of the study will provide empirical evidence on the research findings by genre theorists and the theoretical claims made about the importance of the genre based approach as an effective method for the teaching and learning of History. Insights gleaned from the study would allow educators to institute changes and make improvements to the teaching of History in neighbourhood schools.
