Abstract
Learners with dyslexia primarily struggle with decoding, that would lead to difficulties in reading comprehension (International Dyslexia Association, 2002). Current research and practice predominantly address the primary decoding and word recognition difficulties of dyslexic learners. These however are insufficient in addressing the reading comprehension needs of adolescent learners since progressing in reading comprehension skills is dependent on these learners' ability to decode. With their difficulties in decoding, adolescent learners rarely have opportunities to explore text on par with their cognitive ability and maturity. They would thus have no exposure to higher order reading comprehension skills. This study focuses on addressing this pedagogical gap and exploring possibilities in addressing higher order reading comprehension needs of adolescent learners with dyslexia without being impeded by decoding difficulties. A proposed alternative curriculum was designed with the intention of teaching adolescent learners with dyslexia inferential reading comprehension skills with the use of picture stories in the form of comic strips. The introduction of these pictures would enable learners with dyslexia to gain exposure to higher order comprehension skills when reading stories without being impeded by their difficulties in reading. Results from this study revealed that there are positive impacts of teaching inferential comprehension skills with the use of pictures on adolescent dyslexic learners. This reveals several future possibilities in remediating adolescent learners with dyslexia.
