Abstract
This study aims to assess the language usage pattern of Chinese Language trainee-teachers, who are thirty years or below, in Singapore.
To ascertain the type of language usage pattern of Chinese Language trainee-teachers in Singapore, a survey on language use has been conducted. The methodology that has been used is the questionnaire. Forty-five Chinese Language trainee-teachers from the postgraduate programme (secondary) who are currently studying in Nanyang Technological University-National Institute of Education are selected as the sample of interest for this study. Language use in different domains, namely the family domain, the school campus and the society, of these trainee-teachers are examined. In addition, the relationship between language use and topics, language use and mass media, language use and language abilities skills, in regard to these trainee-teachers, are also being looked into.
There are six chapters in this thesis. Chapter one describes the purpose and significance of this study. In Chapter Two, the sociolinguistic setting of Singapore together with language planning policy (namely the Bilingual Policy and the Speak Mandarin Campaign) are being discussed. In Chapter Three, theories relating to language use and some previous empirical studies are reviewed. Chapter Four introduces the research methodology, including the design of the questionnaire, the sample of interest, instruments that have been used, measurement of variables, collection of data and statistic procedures for data analysis. In Chapter Five, the results and findings of the investigation are presented and discussed. Chapter Six discusses the limitations of this study and further studies can be carried.
