Abstract
This dissertation reports an exploratory study on the use of Synectics approach to teaching writing. An intervention programme was designed to teach students to express themselves using Biyu (similes and metaphors). The focus of this study was to find out if students' writing could be improved in the aspects of creativity, novelty, imagination, expression and grammar if they were coached to use Biyu (similes and metaphors) under the intervention programme.
There were four teachers involved in training, each choosing two classes to participate in the study. Of the two classes, one was assigned to be the control group and the other to be the intervention group.
The samples used in the present study were drawn from one Junior College in Singapore. Participants were 174 first year students taken from eight classes. The training sessions were conducted over eight weeks.
Results show that students' performances generally improved regardless of their prior knowledge of Biyu. Students (Group 1) with higher baseline of biyu showed significant improvement in creativity, novelty, imagination and grammar during the post-test. Students of average baseline of Biyu (Group 2) and weak students (Group 3) did not improve as significantly as group 1.
