Abstract
This study investigated the classroom learning environment and self esteem of 11 - 12 year old students in a primary school and 13 - 14 year old students in a secondary school. Students of the two schools were of average academic achievement and came from a lower and middle-income socio-economic background. Data from two instruments, the Classroom Learning Environment (CES) and the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory (SEI) indicated that the secondary students scored significantly lower in many subscales of the CES and the academic self esteem of the SEI. In order to find out the reasons for the differences, informal discussion sessions were conducted with small groups of students and teachers from each school. The sessions provided information on how the students felt about themselves and their friends. They also brought up some problems on the transition to secondary schools and possible solutions on what schools can do to bring about a smoother transition.
