Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between mental toughness, with trait anxiety, state anxiety, movement reinvestment, affective valence, perceived activation and perceived effort. The secondary aim was to examine the relationship between mental toughness and football penalty kick performance. Ten youth footballer, aged 16 to 17 (M=16.7 (0.483) years) completed a series of self-reporting questionnaires while attempting a penalty-kick scoring task. Pearson correlation showed that mental toughness was negatively related to trait anxiety as measured by the Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire and Sport Anxiety Scale-2 respectively. No significant association was found between mental toughness and the remaining psychological constructs. Pearson correlations did not yield any significant association between mental toughness and penalty kick performance.
