Abstract
In EFL contexts, textbooks for foreign language teaching are recognized as a great teaching resource for teachers and students. The EFL textbooks can be considered a focal instrument (Tomlinson & Masuhara, 2017) as they play a vital role in demonstrating teaching content and detailing instructional strategies and classroom activities. This study aims to investigate the extent to which the principles of the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach are realized in the use of EFL textbooks in Vietnam and, as such, to examine whether the selected textbooks would contribute successfully to the improvement of Vietnamese students’ level of English proficiency. The study analyzes the selected textbooks in a structured and systematic manner in relation to the principles of the CLT approach proposed by Richards (2001) and Richards & Rodgers (2007). The study also puts forward a new principle that is context-specific in the situation of English teaching in Vietnam.
