Abstract
The first objective of this study is to examine the possible relationships between Chinese words and Chinese Characters of disyllabic words in Contemporary Chinese. Contemporary Chinese consists mainly of disyllabic words (双音节词). A disyllabic word is made up of two Chinese characters (字), morphemes (语素)or words (词). For example ''书写"(shuxie) is a disyllabic word made up of two morphemes, namely 书(shu) and 写(xie). As indicated in Xiandai Hanyu Cidian ( 《现代汉语词典》), the lexical meaning of "书写" (shuxie) is 'write'. Apart from that, both 书 (shu) and 写 (xie) have the same meaning of 'write' too. Therefore, we can see that the lexical meaning of "书写 (shuxie) has exactly the same meaning as the two morphemes that formed it. However, there is more than one type of relationships between disyllabic words and the characters or morphemes that formed them.

The 137 disyllabic words use for this area of research are taken from a Singapore Primary Text Hao Er Tong Hun Wen-6A (《好儿童华文-6A》).These disyllabic words are found in the Xue-Yi-Xue (《学一学》 ) section of the text.

In Contemporary Chinese, some disyllabic words are monosemic while some are polysemic. As reflected in Xiandai Hanyu Cidian, "书写" is a monosemous word. However, the two morphemes ''书" and ''写" are both polysemous morphemes. As indicated in Xiandai Hanyu Cidian, "书写" has five meanings while "写" has 4 meanings. This implies that the 1800 Chinese characters that students are to learn at the Primary level will not be having only 1800 meanings. Thus, the next objective of this study will be to find out the total meanings of these 1800 Chinese characters and to explore the pedagogical implications base on the findings.

The materials uses for this area of research are 50 morphemes (taken from Zhong Xiao Xue Huawen Zibiao 《中小学华文字表》) and the polysyllabic words formed by them. This set of material is provided by Educational Technology Division (ETD) of Singapore Ministry of Education.
