Abstract
With China’s swift rise to prominence on the global stage, the demand for Mandarin language courses, qualified teachers and effective teaching materials is growing in just about every corner of the world. It is noticed that Chinese teaching materials designed by L1 authors and L2 authors vary vastly in many aspects: structural design, content and presentation. Current research by Chinese scholars has mainly focused on teaching materials designed or co-designed by L1 authors for foreign learners. Little research is done on the difference between teaching materials designed by L1 and L2 authors. In this thesis, three sets of Chinese language textbooks written by non-native scholars, in the 40s, the 60s and 2010 onwards respectively, were selected and studied. Comparison was done on their course structure, content, presentation, the use of English, the learners’ dominant language and its effect. Certain common characteristics were found in these Chinese language textbooks which differ from most textbooks written by L1 authors. It is hoped that these findings will be meaningful and helpful to tackle problems in local Chinese language teaching and to improve local Chinese textbook design as Singapore’s language landscape has shifted from Chinese as mother tongue to Chinese as L2 over the years.
