Abstract
Conversations with teachers revealed that the use of drama in schools is commonly perceived as impossibility because of time constraints and the general unresponsive nature of students. Their perceptions contradicted my experience with a class of Normal Academic Stream students I taught during my teaching practice. Drama seemed to have a positive effect on the attitudes of this class of students. I believe that it was my use of drama that motivated them to start to pay attention in my class. I also believe that drama can help to develop an individual to such effects other teaching methods cannot. There is no concrete evidence however to support my conviction that drama should play a big part in our education system. Nevertheless, in order to prove the value of drama in Singapore schools, I conducted two drama programmes with two different groups of students of different abilities. This thesis presents the theories and writings of foreign Drama-In-Education practitioners, and is also a culmination of the research that I conducted on the use of drama in a neighbourhood school.
