Abstract
In recent years, the concept of vulnerability and its impact on the experience of emotional intimacy and overall well-being had gained increasing attention in the western context, sparking off debates that challenged the traditional mentality of cultures that often preached greatness in ‘strength’. As limited studies in Asian context had explored this concept, a qualitative analysis using Grounded Theory sought to explore the experiences of 12 Singaporean Asians (born and raised in Singapore) in which 17 subcategories in 4 categories were identified that provided insight into this concept. The study revealed how Cultural teachings, knowledge and understanding influenced and guided one’s Personal experiences and encounters of vulnerability thereby resulting in Consequences that further influenced one’s Personal conceptualizations of vulnerability. Participants postulated that this could in turn influence the cultural (Cultural teachings, knowledge and understanding) view of vulnerability over time.
