Abstract
Lifestyle is often regarded as the ways in which people live, spend and allocate their time. This study investigated whether Secondary Three Express and Normal (Academic) students from Yuying Secondary School, Singapore have different leisure pursuits and spaces. To achieve the research objectives, students' leisure were ascertained through a questionnaire survey. Results from 40 questionnaires indicated that students from different streams did not show significant difference in their lifestyles. The other more influential factors on their lifestyles were gender and language spoken at home. Students from different academic streams hang out in similar leisure spaces because they have equal access to the leisure activities and facilities available in Singapore. Their lifestyles were more neighbourhood-based on weekdays, but more city-centre-based over the weekends. Although more students were watching television programmes, listening to music or using the Internet in their own bedroom, inter-stream and inter-ethnic group interactions did not stop taking place outside the school. The study has also found that students from different backgrounds often carried out leisure activities together.
