Abstract
Whether at shopping malls, food courts or fashionable cafes in Orchard Road these days, one cannot help but overhear conversations in Mandarin or a smatter of poorly spoken English amongst youngsters. Can we attribute this to the success of the "Speak Mandarin" campaign; or has Singaporeans come to a polnt where they revert to their mother tongue with influence from the powerful media? Yes, it is good to be able to converse well in Mandarin, but English remains the language used in commerce and trade.
This study comes about after observing that many youngsters are ignoring the use of English at the polytechnic, despite the fact that the polytechnic 1s supposed to be an institution of higher learning. This study was designed to find out the reason why this is so and also explore the strategies to make Business English more palatable for the youngsters.
