Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine Indian philosophies of music and education with the goal of presenting a Vedic-inspired philosophy of music education. The research questions are: (1) What are Vedic philosophies of music? (2) What are Vedic philosophies of education? (3) Based on the above, what insights can I draw for contemporary music education? To address my research questions, I analyse the Chandogya Upanishad, Kena Upanishad, Katha Upanishad, Brihad-Aaranyaka Upanishad, and the Taittitreeya Upanishad, and synthesise ideas from these texts to build my theory. These texts are chosen because they are some of the most important and central texts in Vedic philosophy. Based on my analyses, four inter-related themes emerge: the Guru, the Shishya, Vidya, and Moksha. Implications for a Vedic-inspired philosophy of music education are discussed in light of the findings. In brief, the Guru (teacher) is revered as one would God, for it is the teacher who leads the Shishya (student) towards Vidya (knowledge) and through that towards Moksha (liberation of the soul).
