Abstract
This paper will look into the relationship between sport, culture, politics, economics and mass media, with specific references to the development of match-fixing and betting on sports in Singapore. This paper does not aim to serve moral functions for our society, but rather as a social function to investigate into the growing phenomena of match-fixing and betting on sports in Singapore. A sociological approach will be employed, coupled with historical interpretation and taking into account cross-cultural comparisons.

The theoretical framework of this project builds around the concept that sport is a social and cultural product. The phenomena of match-fixing and betting on sports emerge as a result of the interaction between social beings to secure shared and conflicting ends.

This paper argues that match-fixing and betting on sports are behaviours that are socially constructed. Sage (1990) defines socially constructed as behaviours that are created as collective responses due to interaction between social beings. which are mobilized around situations, ideas, objects or events.

A historical view and interpretation of the development of the culture in Singapore since 1819 will be provided. This paper will continue to look at the development of political ideologies and economic status of Singapore since independence in 1965. This step is taken in order to analyse at a micro-level , the changing cultural setting as a result of changing social impacts, and their relationship with the phenomena of match-fixing and betting on sports. The theory of "immanent dynamics of figurations" by Nobert Elias will be employed to show the struggles between the various groups of people such as the government, the betters, the sportsmen and the match-fixers. Over time, changes and development in the social processes will take place. This paper seeks to identify the immanent dynamics between sport and other social elements, and the outcome of corruption as a mean to secure survival and wealth.

With the support of the theoretical framework and sociological theories, a case study on the Malaysia Premier League 1994 will be analysed. The case study can be used as a practical example and a measurement for the hypotheses.

A brief concluding chapter attempting to look at various solutions to these social problems will be included. One of the solutions is by educating the masses of the positive values of sport.
