Abstract
The research described in this thesis focuses on the various methods on the teaching and the learning the classical guitar since the nineteenth century. It is believed that the classical guitar attained the 'perfect shape' we know today through numerous transformations at each development stage, mainly in search of improvements to the quality of the sound. The contributions of the nineteenth century guitar masters in term of their pedagogical values are explained and studied. As with any methodological study, this thesis discusses some complex and controversial technical issues with the use of the right and left hand application for the interpretation of newly composed guitar music in each period. This study examines some orthodox practices and challenges some of the approaches of the art of learning to perform (including the use of technology).
An area which this research highlights is the lack of historical information in most guitar practical and teaching books. This thesis will argue that learning practical playing guitar skills must be adequately supported by an understanding of historical context. Thus, this research will briefly discuss the historical development of the guitar and it will also examine the social status of the instrument in the modern era. This study also examines the importance of learning the classical guitar in tertiary music colleges and institutions. In conclusion, some pedagogical issues and learning methods are analyzed and discussed to conform to new approaches in the study of the classical guitar today.
