Multicultural knowledge and skills in a sample of post-secondary education counsellors

Abstract
This qualitative research study was conducted to explore how counsellors in post-secondary education institutions in Singapore conducted, conceptualized and practiced multicultural counselling. Five counsellors were selected through random and snow-ball sampling and were interviewed (audio recorded) for fifty to ninety minutes. The transcribed data was thematically analyzed into two categories namely, 'Multicultural Knowledge' and 'Multicultural Skills'. Four themes ('Cultural Knowledge'; 'Cultural Immersion'; 'Self Knowledge' and 'Language') were identified under the 'Multicultural Knowledge' category and five themes ('Being Open and Willing to Learn'; 'Suspend Judgment and Avoid Imposing Values'; 'Ask, Don't Assume'; 'Being Humble' and 'Universality') were identified under the Multicultural Skills category. Implications for counsellors practicing in multicultural settings, limitations of the study and scope for future research were discussed.
