Abstract
In this paper, we examine how the satisfaction of basic psychological needs of pre-service student teachers during their practicum using the self-determination theory (SDT) predicts their perceived level of enjoyment, value, effort and pressure as well as teaching competence. We collected qualitative data about the student teachers’ sense of competence, autonomy, and relatedness through survey. Data were analyzed through cluster analysis and multiple linear regressions. Findings illustrate primary support the level enjoyment, value, effort and pressure as well as perceived competence in teaching of student teachers during practicum.
Overall, results suggest that SDT can be effectively utilized as a framework for looking at how needs satisfaction predicts student teachers’ level of enjoyment, value, effort and perceived competence in teaching.
