Abstract
Urban development in Singapore, since its independence, has resulted in rapid changes in the outlook of Singapore. These changes or displacements have also affected Singaporeans as well as Theatre in Singapore. This paper will attempt to explore the three most noticeable forms of displacement - spatial, spiritual and symbolic found in Singapore. This paper will also discuss how the theatre is a displaced space as well as a displaced art form. This paper is supplemented by a theatrical performance, This- Space- Meant Displacement Displacement This- Space- Meant, which had its world premier on 12th January 2001 at the displaced theatre, the Nanyang Playhouse, in the displaced National Institute of Education.
