Abstract
The purpose of this Academic Exercise is to explore the extent to which repressed desires can be released on stage, using Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty as a model, and a revision of Spanish playwright Garcia Lorca's Yerma as text. Based on the view that we live in a repressive society, the Theatre of Cruelty may then prove to be useful as a means for allowing a catharsis of the desires that society attempts to keep locked within our unconscious.
By interpreting Artaud's writings on the Theatre of Cruelty and putting them into practice, it seeks to discover how feasible Artaud's theories are in constructing a Theatre of Cruelty performance. It also aims to evaluate the effects that it has on the actors and audience, as well as to discover if the Theatre of Cruelty can really achieve what Artaud had desired it to.
