Abstract
This report investigated the possibility of implementing the Problem Based Learning to improve the students learning interest of the subject C302: Design of Steel and Concrete Structures 1. A survey on the student responses on various issues both on the existing and the proposed systems was made. The subject C302 is offered in the first semester and again in the second semester for the repeat students. The survey was conducted in the second semester of academic year 1998199. A total of forty-three students gave their responses and they belong to three different groups, those who are now taking the subject for the first time, those who are repeating it and those who have already passed the subject.
In their responses on the existing system, most students indicated that they have extrinsic motivation to study the subject. Most of the first timers and those who have already passed the subject considered it to be interesting subject. Most students also did not know how they were assessed in the existing system. In their responses to the proposed PBL-based system, although roughly half of students were against the change, it is because of their unfamiliarity of the new system. They worried that the new system would increase their workload and make it more difficult to pass the subject, unequal group participation and hence the assessment. With more effort to explain the benefits of the PBL-based method in learning to overcome the above doubts, it is possible to implement the method in the subject C302.
