Some of the most exciting innovations in the world today are happening at microscopic, and even atomic levels. It is often at these diminutive scales that the greatest impact is generated. 7his is the essence of material research. "

The manufacturing sector of Singapore had an output of $32 billion, accounting for 22.4 per cent of the country's gross domestic product in 1996. Material research is essential in enhancing Singapore's ability to design new products, thus maintaining our competitiveness against other countries (Straits Times, 9th September 1997).
Indeed, the study of materials science has led to a large number of new discoveries and technological advances. Since our resources are limited, one of the most important and challenging tasks is to create suitable materials to meet our needs. Many modern devices such as semiconductors, solid state lasers, computers and automobiles have been made possible because of material science.
Many of the properties of materials can be explained in terms of their energies and energy levels. In this academic exercise, we shall see how computers are used to assist us in education and research.189 30
