- PublicationRestrictedThe suitability of the mathematics course for the primary 6 EM3 pupils(2002)Apiramee AnandarajahIn Singapore schools the EM3 classes are those which comprise pupils who are academically very weak. Many pupils possess psychological or physical problems. Bearing this in mind, the Ministry of Education subsequently developed a suitable mathematics programme.
The main intention of this research was to examine if the course is in fact suitable for this type of pupil by testing one of the listed objectives; that is, "to ensure that the pupils have a good understanding of basic mathematical concepts". To examine this objective, a test was devised and administered. The work of each pupil was then analysed. Findings of the study indicated that 58% of the pupils mastered the basic concepts that were taught in the course; that is, obtained 50% or more of the total. It was also found that pupils were competent in 10 out of 22 of the topics that had been taught by scoring between 50% and 75%. They were very competent in 3 out of 22 topics by scoring above 75%. Seventy-three percent of the pupils mastered the cognitive level of Knowledge; 79% of Comprehension; and 63% of Application in terms of the total. It is hoped that the implications drawn from the data will assist curriculum planners in redesigning significant portions of the course objectives.140 9
