O. ;Napier, Diane B.Manzon, MariaThis introductory article serves as a hermeneutical tool for interpreting the subsequent articles in this special issue, which explores the nature and roles of comparative education in the 21st century within the context of a changing world order and the growing prominence of comparative education in the Asia-Pacific region. A review of the evolution of different genres of comparative educations reveals the importance of contextual considerations as a constant ritornello (a refrain or instrumental interlude) in comparative education research. Reflections on comparative education in dialectical perspectives in this article provide new impetus and enlightenment on contemporary issues in education and society. Seeing comparative education as a dialectic process enhances the openness of comparative education to challenge the status quo perception of issues, and provides a compare-and-contrast perspective to identify polemic interpretations, such as empirical epistemology which can be viewed as a subjectivity that rejects the transcendental sources of knowledge. Dynamic secularism can be a friend of, and coexist with, religion as it ironically provides more opportunities for more religions to co-exist harmoniously under secularism than many countries that adopt a national religion. The dialectics of comparative education opens up a new role for comparative education to accommodate polemic perspectives to co-exist and to recognize the equal importance of universality and particularity.WOS© Citations 16Scopus© Citations 21 119 421 - PublicationOpen AccessThe institutionalization of comparative education in Asia and the Pacific: Roles and contributions of comparative education societies and the WCCES(2014)
;Bray, MarkManzon, MariaThe institutional framework of the field of comparative education has developed significantly in recent decades. One manifestation of development has been the establishment and activities of professional societies. This paper focuses on 12 societies that operate in Asia and the Pacific. Some of these societies have long histories while others are recent creations. The paper considers the geographic and conceptual remits of these societies, and their activities including organization of conferences and publication of journals. However, research has been inconsistent in addressing how parent involvement ought to be defined and measured, which has led to varied findings across schools and educational systems. Aims Attending to the multidimensionality of the construct, this study adopted a person-centred approach to identify subpopulations of school-based parent involvement. Subsequently, profile differences were investigated in relation to student engagement and three antecedent variables (gender, socio-economic status, and authoritative parenting). Sample Data were obtained from primary (10-year old; N = 4,284) and secondary (14-year old; N = 3,346) school students in Singapore. Methods Latent profile analysis was conducted on student-rated surveys of multiple parent involvement behaviours in school and their perceptions. Subsequently, the manual BCH method was employed to concurrently model covariates and outcomes on the latent profile model. Pairwise comparisons between profiles were examined for statistical significance. Results Consistent across both cohorts, four distinct profiles emerged that revealed high, moderate, selective, and low parent involvement patterns. High parent involvement reflected high ratings across multiple activities, combined with positive perceptions of parental involvement. These profiles differed significantly in terms of their antecedent characteristics, particularly, authoritative parenting, and in relation to their impact on student engagement. Conclusion Results from this study clarify relations between multi-faceted dimensions of parent involvement in school. Awareness of the importance of parent engagement in Singapore is high but research is limited. This working paper aims to lay the foundation for a policy conversation about the role of parent engagement in education. It provides a synopsis of international and local literature on parent engagement: its nature, rationales, global trends, benefits and dilemmas. It reviews some influential conceptual models that have influenced both academic work and policies worldwide. It also presents examples of successful parent engagement practices internationally, which may provide inspiration for Singapore’s own initiatives and policies, while cautioning against the uncritical and wholesale transfer of foreign practices. The paper concludes by suggesting future directions for public policy and educational research. It highlights the directions of a system-wide research that we are undertaking in order to support an evidence-based, context-sensitive policy framework on parent engagement in Singapore.883 2580 - PublicationOpen AccessShadow educations: Mapping the global discourse(2014)
;Manzon, MariaShaljan AreepattamannilPrivate supplementary tutoring, also widely known as shadow education, is becoming a global phenomenon and an object of international scholarship. Private tutoring has multiple forms and positions across educational systems and levels, thus the term “shadow educations”. Asia is a notable location of shadow education activity. This editorial article maps the global discourse on shadow educations, using an expanded framework for analysis based on the Bray and Thomas cube. Against this backdrop, Asian research on shadow education presented in this special issue is introduced and its contribution to the global discourse is highlighted. A possible global research agenda is offered with the hope that new understandings derived from scholarly research may aid stakeholders in achieving the aims of education.WOS© Citations 36Scopus© Citations 46 120 1425
