E-learning is part of the initiative by the School to meet the challenges of this information technology (IT) age. This paper describes a project to redesign a third-year module, Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for deployment on the Web. The design and implement will be based on the Classroom Supplement model where there is a certain amount of face-to-face communication between the teachers and students. The rationale to using IT for education will firstly be presented followed by an overview of E-learning which is synonymous to virtual learning currently rampant in the education arena. The need for self-directed and self-regulated learning in a E-learning environment calls for an understanding of and a review on what these learnings are all about. The effective redesigning of the DSP courseware for E-learning involves more than the introduction of technology - it involves an understanding of the pedagogical requirements for successful teaching and students' learning. A review on existing Web-based designs and their pedagogical background will be made. This will provide an approach for the instructional design of the DSP module. The effectiveness of the Web-based implementation will be evaluated with suggestions for further improvements.
