Abstract
This report discusses the use of teaching strategies based on mini-projects and case studies during practical or laboratory training sessions, in an attempt to improve learning of students enrolled in a diploma programme in electronic engineering at the French-Singapore Institute, Nanyang Polytechnic. The use of mini-projects and case studies were formulated within a framework of teaching strategies based on active learning principles. Surveys conducted showed that the students did not view the mini-projects favourably and they were only slightly less unfavourable in their views towards the case studies. However the mid-tern test results indicate that the students who worked on the mini-projects as part of their laboratory training scored higher than the students who did not work on mini-projects.
