Abstract
The holocaust and mass migration following the transfer of power in India on 15 August 1947 has aroused fierce controversy among scholars and historians on whether the bloodbath might be attributed to British hasty withdrawal or otherwise. While studies on partition and transfer of power in India have not been lacking, little attention has been given to investigating the actual reasons behind the British decision to accelerate the date of transfer date.
The main objective of this Academic Exercise is to investigate the main reasons which led to Britain's decision to accelerate the transfer of power in India by looking at developments during March to June 1947. It argues that the reasons for the hasty withdrawal of the British are to be found in the break-up of institutions responsible for maintaining law and order in the country.
