Abstract
Mandarin Primer is one of the most representative oral course book written by Yuan Ren Chao and first published in 1948. During World War II, Chao put the course book to effective use in the teaching of Chinese, grooming numerous outstanding talents, especially where the spoken language is concerned. Therefore, phonetic teaching became one of his most successful teaching contents. Targeting adult learners from an English-speaking background, the explanatory texts were presented in English while the Gwoyeu Romatzyh phonetic system was adopted to represent the sounds of Mandarin Chinese. As a result of these constraints, the well-designed course book, which included a comprehensive coverage on the sound system and pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese, has not received much attention within the Chinese research circle since it publication. The sound system forms the basis of language learning but its importance has long been neglected, even in today’s Chinese language courses. It’s increasingly common to see the touch-and-go approach adopted when dealing with the Mandarin Chinese sound system, and the skewed focus on the teaching of vocabulary and the grammatical structures. Recognizing the important contributions as well as the constraints of Mandarin Primer in building a solid phonetic base, this thesis aims to first refine the content and pedagogy suggested by Chao, before tapping on the advancement of modern information and communication technology in building an e-model for promoting the scientific development of phonetic teaching.
There are altogether five chapters. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the research background, stating its purpose, emphasis, value and structure. Chapter 2 gives a brief introduction to Yuan Ren Chao and his Chinese teaching experiences, before discussing in detail the development, content, application and influence of Mandarin Primer. Chapter 3 analyses the content and pedagogy of the phonetic component in Mandarin Primer, identifies its features and constraints, and summarizes the unique phonetic model devised by Chao for the building of a solid phonetic foundation. Chapter 4 discusses the application of information communication technology and mobile network in building a phonetic e-model based on the foundation laid by Chao in Mandarin Primer in addressing the needs and learning style of 21st century learners. The final chapter explores the limitations of this research and possible research projects that can be undertaken in the immediate future.
