Abstract
Cyberbullying is a universal concern. Given the reduced contextual cues and relative anonymity of the online world, children and adolescents tend to be inattentive to their own online behavior, engage more and more in high risk behaviors, thereby increasing the risk of getting into interpersonal conflict in a cyber context. Child variables associated with cyberbullying include Internet usage patterns and characteristics, psychosocial difficulties and challenges, proactive aggression features, and normative beliefs about the acceptability of aggression. Likewise, parent–child relationship variables such as a poor emotional bond, a lack of knowledge about the child/adolescent’s online activities, and a lack of adequate parental monitoring and parental mediation are largely responsible for cyberbullying. Additionally, strategies targeting both child/adolescent issues, and parent-related or parent–child relationship variables are of great importance for prevention and intervention work. Also, for prevention and intervention strategies to be effective, they should be multi-pronged and multi-systemic.
