Abstract
From the title, it is obvious that this thesis revolves around the poetry of Fan Chengda. " Impromptu verses on the four seasons of the countryside " is a set of sixty verses written by Fan, based on the scenery of the countryside and the way farmers lead their lives. Quite a number of critics have studied the verses. However: they had merely extract a few of the verses to discuss, failing to notice that those are only a small part of the scenario created by Fan.
I feel that in order to understand Fan's verses, one has to look at it as an overall picture And only then will one be able to truly apprehend and appreciate the beauty of his work. Thus, in view of this, I attempt to study the " Impromptu verses on the four seasons of the countryside " from a whole new prospective. I aim to do an in-depth study on this set of verses and in ?he process of doing so, thoroughly explore the structure and influence of the verses on the literary world.
Before looking into the verses, it is essential to know about Fan's background; as it would have effect. on his character, lifestyle and perspectives of life. These, in rum are the components Fan has employed in his work. Thus, in the first chapter, I will summarized his life and also his achievements in poetry writing.
Next, I will proceed to break down his verses into four main areas of concern. This will provide us with a better picture on the q d t y of the verses. Firstly, Fan's verses have very substantial content. I will approach the content through the various techniques he employed in his work; thus, verifying other textual research's given credit.
Secondly, I will see how Fan incorporates his feelings into his depiction of the natural scenery. I will use the verses to exemplify the quality of his description and how he immersed his readers without being too forceful in getting them to accept his views. Thirdly, Fan's usage of colours in his work is also one of the areas. I will use Mr. Xiao Shui Shun'S theory on these verses to pose a completely new standpoint. Fourthly, I will look into Fan's language and judge his attainments.
In the third chapter, I will compare Fan's verses with Shijing's " Bin Feng . Seven Months " and Tao Yuanming's verses on the countryside. Shijing is said to have created the first countryside poetry's structure. Many critics also believe that it has certain influence on Fan's work. Hence, I aim to discuss the effects it has on his verses. Tao is viewed as the founder of countryside verses. Thus, in this chapter, I will also weigh Tao and Fan's writing to present their differences.
In the conclusion, I will outline Fan's influence and contribution to the literary arena. From the above areas, I hope to verify critics' research and shed new lights on Fan's " Impromptu verses on the four seasons of countryside".
