Abstract
This book chapter focuses on the history of Malay literature in Singapore from the ancient Kingdom of Temasik in 13th and 14th centuries, the classical periods of 16th and 17th centuries, during the British empire and early Malay publishing (1819-1900), the modernization and Malay nationalism period, Japanese occupation period, Independence, Separation from Malaysia, Post-1965 until to date. The article provides an insight into its milestone developments, roles and functions of Malay literature as a forceful native voice and as narrative nationhood for Singapore and the Malay world.
