Abstract
This is a report on the active learning activities, involving critical and creative reconstructions of texts and information, that the author adopted in the teaching of Tang poetry to a group of students in the Diploma of Education Programme offered by the National Institute of Education, Singapore. Chapter One is an examination into the background of the students in the light of the objectives of the course concerned. In Chapter Two, the author elaborates on his understanding of the relationships of teaching of Chinese literature and active learning. Chapters Three gives an account of the teaching strategies that the author employed in the teaching of history of Chinese literature to the same group of students. Such strategies are essential for the success of the active learning activities elaborated on in Chapter Four, the main body of this report. In Chapter Four, the author reports in detail his use of critical and creative reconstructions for the teaching of Tang poetry. Active learning strategies are designed with the aims of achieving: 1) guided reconstruction of meaning, 2) guided and creative reconstructions of literary conventions and rhetorics and 3) reconstruction of the intellectual and artistic milieu. In conclusion, the author argues that lecturers in classical Chinese literature should re-consider their teaching strategies in the light of the changed backgrounds and needs of the students. He also calls for them to engage one another in an open and constructive discussion on what " active learning" means in their disciplines.
