Abstract
The School-based Reading Innovation Project was carried out in a neighbourhood primary school and its main objective was to map out reading instruction programme in the school, compare it with international standards and introduce innovations that would enhance it. The findings of the project revealed that reading instruction in the selected school lacked some fundamental components of a good reading instruction programme. Some of the key shortfalls were an over emphasis on the instruction of decoding and surface comprehension and lack of instruction of vocabulary and comprehension strategies. Implementation of innovation procedures over 2 years showed that there was a positive enhancement not only with teacher development but student reading and comprehension abilities. The study concludes with the observation that the research experience gained in the selected school is also applicable to other Singapore schools seeking to enhance reading instruction.
