Abstract
This study attempts to demonstrate how alternate forms of assessment involving a diagnostic approach could be used in the context of IRT applications. The items were written in clusters of 3 based on narrowly defined common content area in the area of microeconomics. Each cluster consist of items testing progressively higher Bloom's cognitive levels. Due to context effects item clusters cannot be analysed using standard 1-, 2- or 3-Parameter Logistic Models. Instead, the Rating Scale Model is used. The study demonstrates in detail, the manner in which examinees respond to items testing different cognitive levels based on item thresholds. Diagnostic and remedial implications for the use of testlets are discussed.
