Abstract
Despite widespread interest in topics of extra-curricular activities, there is little hard data on basic questions such as 'what', 'why' and the 'perceived outcomes' of participation in extra-curricular activities. This study focused on extra-curricular participation in Ngee Ann Polytechnic and
i) attempted to investigate the factors contributing towards students' participation in extra-curricular activities
ii) attempted to investigate the factors contributing towards non-participation in extra-curricular activities
iii) discussed the perceived outcomes of participation in extra-curricular activities
The research instruments used were
i) a survey of a sample of 500 students aged 17-24 years old from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. There were a total of 341 male students and 159 female students.
ii) personal interviews with 20 students.
The instruments were used to obtain information on students' gender, age, year of study, peer influences, interest, familiarity, benefits obtained from participation, time constraints and distance from home on their participation/non-participation in extra-curricular activities.
Further, it sought to investigate students' perceived outcomes of participation in extra-curricular activities.
Participation in extra-curricular activities remains under-represented in educational research in Singapore. It is hoped that this research may go some way towards providing some answers to questions surrounding participation in extra-curricular activities for young adults. It joins a small body of research on this topic.
