Abstract
This study explored the counselling and guidance practices in Singapore Madrasahs. It explained the role of Madrasahs in promoting Muslim students’ psycho-socio-spiritual development and mental health. A research instrument was designed to gather responses from nine participants, who were involved in the practice of counselling and guidance in their respective Madrasahs. As a result, seven themes emerged from a qualitative analysis of the nine interviews. These were the availability and concepts of counselling and guidance in Madrasahs, its approaches as prevention and remediation to social and mental health issues among Madrasah students, successful practices as well as challenges and constraints to the current practices. Recommendations were made for further improvements to the current practices. Finally, development of a culturally-sensitive practice for Madrasahs to remain relevant in Singapore’s nation building was discussed.
