Abstract
This research investigates how teachers develop their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in four subject areas: English Language, Geography, Mathematics, and Physics. Shulman (1986) defined PCK as a distinct and unique domain of teacher knowledge that differentiates expert teachers in a subject area from subject area subjects. The qualitative research consists of three studies. Study 1 which involves interviewing 12 teachers sought to elicit the developmental stages of PCK from empirical data. The outcome of Study 1 was the PCK developmental model. Study 2 tracks the PCK development of 25 teachers to further verify the stages of this model. Study 3 focussed on finding and generating representations. The outcome was four PCK exemplars for the physics topics of Heat, Refraction, Mass, and Air pressure.
