Abstract
With regards to the issue of regionalization in Asia Pacific, this paper adopted a spatial perspective. This is accomplished through the integration of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and exploratory spatial data analysis. The purpose of such an integration is to introduce spatial analytical techniques such as intramax analysis, Moran's I, G-statistics and Local Indicators of Spatial Association, which are lacking in most GIS. The analysis is carried out on trade data collected from the past two decades, 1975 to 1995. The results that are obtained from the intramax analysis indicate the presence of a functional region within Asia Pacific. In addition, this paper did examine if a "Yen bloc" created by Japan actually exist in this region. An examination of significant New Gi* statistics for both export and import shares showed that Japan was not involved in any bloc building activities. Instead, New G,* statistics suggest that Japan's trade is headed towards globalization.
