Abstract
Su Shi was a great literary master. One of his accomplishments was his haofang lyrics. Haofang, may be loosely translated as "brave abandonment". It is, however, difficult to define haofang lyrics accurately even up to this day. Scholars have differing views of an appropriate definition. Nevertheless, it is clear that Su Shi did manage to compose lyrics that are different from the lyrics written before him. Much has been debated about the value of Su Shi's haofang lyrics. However, few had tried to account for the background of the composing of these lyrics. I feel that an understanding of why he had written such lyrics, will aid in a better understanding of the features, hence, the definition of haofang lyrics. Therefore, in this essay, I attempt to provide an highlight of related events in his life, his characteristics, thinking and beliefs, that might have played a part in the composing of these haofang lyrics. I feel that there is a path of development which can be traced. Even if those were external events that happened to him, they will affect the development and the outcome of his character, thinking and beliefs, which are his intrinsic features. These features will help to shape the development of his literary work, which is the external representation of his intrinsic features. Haofang lyrics are not a mere reflection of his impromptu feelings, but rather a conscious effort on his part, which could be observed by the considerable number of which lyrics he wrote. Therefore, the development of this essay, is based on the principle "from within to without".
The first chapter of the essay discusses the background of Su Shi and highlights the events which are related to the composition of the his haofang lyrics. The second chapter discusses his philosophical thinking and his beliefs in literary composition. The emphasis is on the understanding of his philosophical thinking and his beliefs in literary composition, which will be followed by a discussion of the features of his haofang lyrics. The discussion of the features of his haofang lyrics will be done in two chapters. The first of which discusses the features of the contents of the lyrics, the second of which discusses the characteristic style of the haofang lyrics. However, it is necessary for me to briefly discuss the basic definition of haofang lyrics and to identify which lyrics are considered as typical haofang lyrics, before I can discuss the features.
Therefore, there will be a part of the third chapter on this, which would serve as a bridge between the discussion of his intrinsic features and his haofang lyrics. To conclude, my essay discusses both the intrinsic characteristics of Su Shi which might have led to the composition of his haofang lyrics and the features of the typical haofang lyrics. It is also my intention that by doing so, it would provide a better understanding of why Su Shi wrote haofang lyrics and what haofang lyrics are.
