Abstract
This paper looks into finding possible patterns existent in an individual's music listening preference. A review of literature on music preference shows that LeBlanc had developed a most comprehensive model to link together the various factors affecting an individual's music preference. He presented the model in an easy-to-understand diagram and explained how it can he used interactively to track an individuals' music listening preference. The literature review also shows that the works of many other researchers support LeBlanc's model and his classification of the variables under three broad sources affecting an individual's music preference: his environment, his music and his personal characteristics. For this paper, the author conducted in-depth interviews incorporating written activities with 3 participants. The interviews start with a set of primary questions and based on the response, secondary questions are posed. These secondary questions follow an interview guide which the author has devised based on LeBlanc's model, "Sources of Variation in Music Preference." The data collected from the participants are analysed to gain an insight into the participant's subjective understanding of their music listening preference. The existence of possible patterns in their preference response are then discussed. It is found that the emotions evoked in the 3 participants by the music they hear is a common determining factor for their preference decision. The paper then concludes with some suggestions on music teaching and on the use of LeBlanc's model in music preference research.
