Abstract
This case study examines the perspectives of four former Literature students who took Literature as a GCE ‘O’ Level subject and graduated from a Singapore secondary school in 2013. They were interviewed to gain insight into their perceptions on studying Literature and the impact they think the subject has made on them. Their perceptions of Singapore Literature and the relationship between studying Literature and English Language were also explored. Through individual semi-structured interviews, common themes in their responses were identified. It was found that the participants perceived they have gained pragmatic, aesthetic, social, and affective benefits in having studied Literature in English as a GCE ‘O’ Level subject. Perceptions varied when it came to identifying relationships between English Language proficiency and studying Literature, and generally all participants found literary value in Singapore Literature, although opinions varied when preferences about studying Singaporean texts as full texts were examined.
