Abstract
Thls thesis attempts to examine how Singapore English Drama questions the issue of National Identity through an analysis of three locally written plays : Mixed Signals by Michael Chiang, Mama Looking For Her Cat by Kuo Pao Kun, and Emily Of Emerald Hill by Stella Kon. In addition, the writer has also written and produced a play, Who Am I ?. which explores and interrogates the Singaporean Identity. The play was performed on the 13' of January 2000 at Raffles Studio Theatre to an audience of academic staff, some theatre practitioners and friends.
Chapter One consists of an investigation of National Identity as a construct, and of the effects and implications of the policy of National Identity on the Singapore society. Chapter Two provides a discussion on the historical overview of Singapore English Drama. Chapter Three consists of an analysis of three locally written plays, namely, Mixed Signals by Michael Chiang, Mama Looking For a Cat by Kuo Pao Kun and Emily Of Emerald Hill by Stella Kon, by focusing on how local playwrights deal with the subject of National Identity. It is also in this chapter that the writer would test her hypothesis; that the plays questioned the issue of National Identity and that they do not do it in a radical manner as to undermine the general policy. Finally, in Chapter Four the writer will provide a 'description of the objectives, scope and methodology, which she has employed towards developing a performance on the issue of National Identity.
