Abstract
This paper is a discussion of the romanticising effect of film adaptation of literary novels. The author suggests that in the adaptation process, the narrative would inadvertently be reduced when translated into film, and this reduction process arises from the differences in how the novel and film are respectively able to actualise narrative, due to formal differences between the media. In addition, the author also suggests that the reduction process in adapting the novel into a film would inevitably result in romanticisation. Three pairs of texts are discussed as case studies: the first two pairs are novel-to-film adaptation, while the third pair is a film-to-short story case.
