Abstract
The motivation for this case study is founded on the desire to explore how the work of local theatre practitioners (i.e. directors and playwrights) negotiates with the progression of Singapore, post-Independence, and whether theatre, in Singapore today, is still being used and/or regulated by the government to espouse socially-, culturally-, and politically-'correct' ideologies.
Thus, this academic exercise uses the work of The Necessary Stage, Kuo Pao Kun, Alfian Sa'at & Tan Tarn How to investigate whether the regulation of post-Independence Singapore theatre is based on the assumption that binaries exist between artist and state, artists and society, as well as artistic integrity and social cohesion, and if so, the validity of these assumptions and their impact on the direction of our local theatre scene. Its analysis employs the theory of the Four Capitals by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu.
To investigate these questions, the researcher developed and conducted interviews with a range of theatre practitioners in conjunction with the analysis of plays written/directed by the above-mentioned.
