Abstract
Social relationships are fundamental to our being. It is also a component of social inclusion, which Singapore, as a society, aspires to reach. As such, this study sought to explore the social relationships of adults with mild intellectual disability (ID) in Singapore. The social relationships of a matched group of typically developing (TD) adults were also examined to provide a fuller picture. Specifically, the typical social and friendship networks of a group of ID (n = 15) and TD adults (n = 15) were examined. Besides finding who ID and TD participants typically interacted and considered as friends, the study sought to understand what a friend means to them. Participants’ ID/TD status and the activities they engaged in were found to relate differently to network size, composition and social support. Overlaps in ID and TD participants’ conception of friend were also found, albeit the existence of nuanced differences.
