- PublicationRestrictedExploring learners' learning effectiveness supported by mobile technology(2014)Chua, Serene Pui HongThis survey study examined the soldiers' learning effectiveness supported by mobile technology (comprising of LEARNet and video camera) in a SAF military training institute. The participants of the study were 173 learners from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). They completed two specially-developed questionnaires for this study. The first survey was "What's happening in this class?" (WIHIC) which evaluated learners’ perceptions of the learning environment in terms of cohesiveness, instructor support, and involvement, task orientation and cooperation. Next, the "Learners' learning effectiveness survey" (LLES) was used to evaluate the perceived learning effectiveness of mobile technology in training their mission competencies. The five mission competencies are: Soldiering skills, situational awareness, decision making, command and control; and leadership and values. This research study explored the extent of association between the learners' perceptions of learning environments and their perceived learning effectiveness by conducting a correlation analysis between the quantitative findings from the two questionnaires.
From both the quantitative and qualitative findings, the study concluded that mobile technology (comprising both LEARNet and video camera) was perceived to be effective by the learners. This study also surfaced areas of deficiencies where recommendations would be made to bridge these deficiencies in order to leverage and maximise the full potentials and benefits of mobile technology enabled learning environment.313 111
