- PublicationRestrictedEffects of online collaborative concept mapping on students' structural knowledge of chemistry(2006)Wong, Raymond Kwek LoongThis study seeks to answer the research questions "Does collaborative concept mapping affect students' structural knowledge of chemistry and how?" and "Is a computer-supported collaborative learning environment i.e. Knowledge Forum@ or a face-to-face mode of discussion more effective for collaborative concept mapping and why?" Collaborative concept mapping has been found to be effective in helping students to achieve better understanding of the content domain through social interaction via discussion and elaboration of ideas. This study is an experimental study to compare a group of Secondary 3 students using a CSCL tool (Knowledge Forum@) to support discussion of their individually created concept maps with the aid of scaffolds and a group of Secondary 3 students using a face- to-face mode of discussion. The results showed that collaborative concept mapping, regardless of the mode of discussion, helped to improve the students' structural knowledge of chemistry as reflected in the improvement in their concept map scores. Face-to-face mode of discussion was also found to be more effective for collaborative concept mapping as the students found the feedback from their fellow students to be more immediate.
